Youth are ready to serve
The primary goal of public Montessori schools is to develop good citizens. The values to achieve that goal are worked on from early childhood, so it is not surprising that young Montessorians are leaders who not only want to progress as individuals but have an unquenchable thirst to serve others.
This was recently evident during a meeting between students and graduates of Montessori public schools where a handful of young people held a meeting at which various initiatives began to take shape to help children and young people continue to receive an education of excellence.
Among the most latent concerns among the group is serving other students who did not have a very favorable school year. "It is important to offer children and young people what they need so that they do not have a 'hole' in their education," shared the young Cecilia del Río. "The important thing about education is that one learns, not to just pass the grade," she added. Ana V. Vázquez.
The meeting was joined by the director from the school Juan Ponce de León, Adamaris Zambrana, to welcome the service proposal made by the students.
The central idea in the minds of these young people is to convene and organize their peers into a team of volunteers to offer tutoring or support to students who need it with different and fun strategies. “The experiences during the pandemic have been diverse, we do not know what needs each one brings. We must offer a mentoring program that works for everyone."
In this meeting, the young people also had a virtual guest by the Presiding Judge of the Supreme Court, Maite Oronoz, who congratulated the group for their sense of community and their willingness to serve.
Addressing the group, Oronoz explained that modern social sciences establish that community unity is what drives profound changes in a country and celebrated that the Montessori methodology encourages community building and commitment to the common good.
In this meeting, several work committees were organized to shape various projects that this group is facing.
