The Fundamental Role of the Montessori Implementation Assistant: A Pillar for Academic Success

Since the 1990s, Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) has played an essential role in the expansion and strengthening of the Montessori educational model in public schools in Puerto Rico. This project, which began with the dedication and effort of the community in the first public Montessori school, Juan Ponce De León in Guaynabo, has grown impressively, thanks to the participation of key figures: the Montessori Implementation Assistants.
For the 2024-2025 school year, INE has hired more than 290 Montessori Implementation Assistants, who play a crucial role in the Montessori environment, serving the child directly and supporting his or her development and academic achievement. These Assistants work closely with Montessori guides, helping to create a prepared environment that fosters independence, curiosity, and active learning for each student.
It is worth noting that the majority of the Assistants are women. In addition, many of the Assistants come from the same community where the schools are located, which strengthens community ties and generates a positive impact on the family and school environment. Their work not only contributes to academic development, but also strengthens the sense of belonging and collaboration within each educational community.
Since its origins, this project has proven to be an example of how collaboration between schools, families and the community can transform the educational landscape in Puerto Rico. INE is proud to have such a committed team that, day after day, works to improve the lives of our children and their future.
